Envy Murder Mystery

Setup Guide

Someone's been killed at the Carnegie mansion, and you're throwing the party. Here's how to get from download to "who did it?!" in under 20 minutes.

As host, you'll set the game up before your guests arrive, so nobody sees any spoilers before the party starts. Here's what we'll cover:

1Print Your Kit

Open the PDF from your download email and print it on standard A4 paper. No special printer or high-gloss paper needed, though a print shop's "200 GSM satin" paper does give it a nicer, sturdier feel if you want to go the extra mile.

Watch: How to Download & Print

The kit is designed for a team of up to 5 players. Got a bigger group? Just print extra copies and run it as a head-to-head competition, because nothing says "1920s high society" like a little rivalry:

PlayersCopies to print
Up to 51 copy
6 to 102 copies
11 to 153 copies
16+4 copies
Want to customize the game? Your download includes a Designer's Kit folder with an editable version, so you can tweak names or details if you like. Totally optional, most people skip straight to printing.

2Set Up The Puzzle Cards

Everything printed and laid out for the Envy Murder Mystery kit

Envy has 10 challenges that lead to a final Police Report, which reveals who did it. Setup takes about 5 minutes:

Watch: How to Set Up

  1. Place all the puzzle cards in the middle of a table.
  2. Players can solve them in order or tackle them randomly, whatever your group prefers.
  3. Keep scissors, blank paper, and pens nearby (a dark marker works best on the full-colour sheets).
  4. Start solving!

Want it more atmospheric? Spread the puzzle sheets around the room instead of keeping them on one table, tuck one under a stack of books, or hide one inside a drawer. A moody playlist helps too, search "1920s jazz" on any music app and let it run in the background.

3When Your Guests Arrive

Welcome everyone and set the scene before you start the clock:

What's going on: Explain that this is a murder mystery. Someone at the party killed Carnegie, and the group has to solve 10 puzzles to figure out who.

How to solve: Each puzzle's answer gets written onto the Police Report. Once all 10 are filled in, the report reveals the culprit.

Playing in teams: Appoint one team leader per team. First team to finish wins. Using a hint costs 5 minutes off your time.

Ready to play? Bring your wits, your best 1920s attitude, and let the party begin.

Stuck on a puzzle mid-game? Every clue has a gentle nudge waiting for you.
