Setup Guide

Zombies have hit the city and they want your pizza. Here's how to turn your download into a nail-biting survival night in under 20 minutes.

Unlike a table-based kit, Escape Room Z is played by hiding clues around your actual space, more like a real escape room. As host, you'll do a quick setup before your group arrives. Here's what we'll cover:

1Print Your Kit

Open the PDF from your download email and print it on standard A4 paper. No special paper needed, the gritty survivor-camp look works fine on regular printer paper.

The kit is designed for a team of up to 5 players. Got a bigger group? Print extra copies and run it as a King of the Hill style competition between teams:

Want to customize the game? Your download includes a Designer's Kit folder with an editable version, so you can tweak names or details if you like. Totally optional, most people skip straight to printing.

2Hide The Clue Cards

This kit turns your actual room into the escape room. Setup takes about 10 minutes:

  1. Cut out the clue cards and hide a few of them around the room, tucked away but findable.
  2. Stick a few cards directly onto walls where players will spot them while exploring.
  3. Use a real oven, cupboard, or box as a "locked" prop for one of the challenges, whatever you have on hand works.
  4. Keep pens, paper, and scissors within reach.

Hints on the go: Escape Room Z uses a phone-based Hints page instead of a paper answer sheet, so players can check it mid-game without spoiling anything for themselves.

3When Your Guests Arrive

Welcome everyone and set the scene before you start the clock:

What's going on: The zombies have hit the city, and your group is trapped with the last slice of pizza in town. Solve the clues around the room to escape before the horde breaks in.

How to solve: Explore the room, find the hidden clues, and work through them together. Check the Hints page if anyone gets stuck.

Setting the mood: Snacks, drinks, and a moody playlist go a long way here. Give everyone a quick rundown on how escape rooms work if it's their first time.
